Home Grown Final Images

For the output for my “Windows on the World” project I decided to create a series of Tessa Traeger inspired photographs of artisans who predominantly work with their hands, either grow or make more individual things as a contrast to the world of mass produced and  items marketed for mass consumption. Read more about Tessa Traeger here.

On reflection I decided that there was a wealth of material amongst friends and family and as many of my friends are of an age where life’s experience is beginning to reflect in their appearance I thought they would make good subjects with interesting detail in their hands compared to the, relatively, unblemished appearance of more youthful subjects.

With a couple of notable exceptions for people making businesses of their endeavours I doubt any of these activities will make the subjects significantly more wealthy they do however, without exception, make them happy.

Ultimately I plan to have a series of at least 6 images, as of  10/12/14 six are completed, although at least one could be considerably stronger and will probably be re-shot or replaced, and 2 more are in the planning stages with agreement from the intended models to participate. (Click on images to enlarge, Click on the Image title for a bio of the model, background to the shot, the activity depicted and a description and evaluation of the photographic techniques employed – links open in new windows, Click here to return to list of briefs)

Update March 2015. The final series of images are below, a total of 8 in the end. I discarded 2 of the 6 completed earlier as on final review I didn’t feel they were strong enough to be included and detracted from the overall quality of the set. For completeness and comparison the original blog posts concerning the replaced images can be seen by clicking on these links “The Gardener” was replaced by a photograph on the same theme (see below) and “Self Portrait” was replaced by “The Tree Surgeon”

Steve, these are really lovely and what clever friends and family you have. Is Jim the onion grower? Alastair will be really chuffed that his whittling was used. Fantastic on your grade and well deserved. Fi xxxxx
